Anakin Skywalker seemed like such a cute (albeit annoying) little kid in Star Wars: Episode I. Shame he had to go all H.A.M. on us, take on the mantle of Darth Vader, and join the Dark Side. If he hadn’t, though, the first six episodes of Star Wars would’ve been really boring: “Anakin grew up to be a spaceship mechanic, married a local barmaid, and had two very well-behaved children. The end.” Yawn. Good thing for us he didn’t, right?
Vader, a ruthless cyborg serving as Emperor Palpatine’s right-hand boogeyman, uses the Dark Side of the Force to promote the agenda of the Galactic Empire. As a child, Vader (Anakin Skywalker) was prophesied to be the Jedi who would bring balance to the Force. He received Jedi training under a Obi-Wan Kenobi, but ultimately defected to the Dark Side in an effort to save his wife, Queen Padmé Amidala. Skywalker has a vision of Padmé dying in childbirth, and pledges himself as Palpatine’s Sith apprentice to gain the power to save her, thinking that he can eventually overthrow Palpatine and he & Amidala can rule the galaxy together.
At this point, however, Skywalker’s mind is too far gone to think rationally, and he accuses Amidala and Obi-Wan of conspiring against him. He chokes Amidala using the Force until she is unconscious, and then nearly dies in a light saber duel with Obi Wan. Palpatine finds Skywalker’s mangled body and turns him into the black armor-clad cyborg with anger issues we all know and love. Vader is finally killed during the sixth episode of Star Wars, and balance is returned to the Force and the galaxy.
There are countless rumors as to the plot of the upcoming Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, but there’s one thing we do know: Darth Vader won’t be mouth-breathing his way through it. And that kinda bums us out, because he is THE greatest movie villain of all time, and there’s no way George Lucas could’ve come up with anything better for Episode 7!
